| I spent a whole three hours in Macau so I'm no expert but it's a bit like Hong Kong but much smaller and Portugese. While in HK all the signs a re English and Cantonese, in Macau they are in Portuegese, Cantonese and English (they're not stupid - they know no one really speaks Portugese). The Portugese bought Macau centuries before the Brits got HK and only gave it back to China in 1999. It's much older then Hong Kong and has lots of beautiful old catholic churches. It's also been in HK's sahdow for the last century so, unable to compete, has resorted to gambling and is busy turning itself into a Chinese Vegas. Part of this is the Sands resort. Outside of the casino they have this little theme park in the style of a Europen town. It's amazing but a little odd as the seafront looks like Amsterdam, the main street like Venice and the rest has a passing Portugese appeal. But never, in all my Euro travels, have I seen a volcano, Mayan temple and Chinese temple all next to each other in the same town. | ||
