Parliament
Posted Saturday, 02 June 2007
We did a tour of their parliament, which was great. They've got a similar system to us except with some kind of proportional representational thing we couldn't really understand, and they had the sense to abolish their version of the House of Lords years ago. We watched them in action in their House of Commons and the MPs basically shout over eachother, abuse eachother and generally act like a bunch of gobby kids. We've never seen our MPs in action but I'm guessing it's pretty similar.

At the start of the tour we had an extensive health and safety talk in which we were warned repeatedly of not tripping over the chairs or stairs - except the kiwi accent makes it 'cheers and steers'. 'Jim' is 'Jem'. They don't 'tackle' in rugby, they 'tickle'. Brilliant!
