The city
Posted Wednesday, 07 March 2007
Our first look at Australia was from 3,000-feet up. We were dead excited, but three hours later we were still flying over endless red dust and the thrill waned a bit. It was pretty crazy when we could see where day ended and night began: there was a clear line across the desert that we flew in to.

Melbourne’s wicked. It’s attractive to look at, though there aren’t any really landmarks as such, but it’s got a great atmosphere with lots going on. We stayed with our mate Jamie (from Brighton), and another friend Ross (also Brighton) was there for part of the time too.

It was outrageously hot some days, reaching 38 at some stage, and at those times we stayed indoors with windows/doors/curtains shut and just sweated. One time we did go out when it was searingly hot because there was a breeze we assumed would be cooling, but actually it felt like having an enormous hairdryer blowing right in your face. Jim couldn’t stand it and got all disorientated. We walked through town enjoying going past air-conditioned shops for the cool blast from the doors.

We did a lot of swimming at the beach (with Megan Jamie’s dog) and sitting around in cafes, a bit of shopping (fab shops), and a fair bit of wandering around taking in the city and basically got the hang of filling a day with nothing to do. St Kilda was the best place for that. It’s a top area right on the beach with the best bakeries EVER and days just slipped away.
